New Delhi, April 3: Union Minister for Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, on Thursday presented the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, in the Rajya Sabha.

He clarified that the proposed legislation was not aimed at Muslims nor intended to harm their religious sentiments. Instead, it seeks to enhance the management of Waqf properties, address existing challenges, ensure transparency, and incorporate technology for better oversight.

Earlier on Thursday, the Lok Sabha passed the Bill after a lengthy debate that lasted nearly 12 hours, with a vote of 288-232 in favour.

Presenting the Bill in the Upper House, Rijiju, who noted that the legislation had been reviewed and revised by a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), emphasized that the Bill was not about religion but about property management.

He further explained that the aim of the legislation was to include all Muslim sects in the Waqf board.

The Minister also provided statistics, stating that in 2004, there were 4.9 lakh Waqf properties, a number that has since grown to 8.72 lakh.

Rijiju sought the opposition’s support for the Bill, asserting that it aims to fulfill objectives left incomplete by previous governments. He also pointed out that Waqf properties represent the largest block of land ownership in the country, second only to defense and railways.
