Bhubaneswar, Oct 23: Though the impending Cyclone Dana, predicted by the IMD has not yet shown any fury in Odisha, the people of the state, especially living on the coastal line of the Bay of Bengal are more panicked for it.
As in the yester years, the people of Jagatsingpur, Kendrapara, Puri, Balasore and Ganjam districts have witnessed the devastation and sufferings of the 1999 Super Cyclone and Fani in 2019, they have packed for safer places of shelter, to get rid of the wrath of the Cyclone Dana, which is almost looming over their heads.
Meanwhile, studying on the projections and the nature of the LoPAR and the depression formed over the Bay of Bengal which are almost leading towards the severe Cyclonic system 'Dana', the IMD DG Mrutyunjaya Mohapatra has brought a sigh of respite for the inhabitants of the coastal district.
IMD DG’s recent study based on the national and internation Climatic Models says the intensity of the Cyclone Dana will be lesser as compared to the Amphan. Thus, its effect on Odisha regarding massive devastation will also be weaker than that of the Amphan.
The Amphan was an extremely severe Cyclonic Systerm whereas the impending climatic disorder, the Cyclone Dana will never take shape of an extremely severe cyclone.
Underlining the gusting speed of the wind during the landfall process of the Cyclone Amphan, IMD DG informed that cyclone Amphan was an extremely severe cyclonic storm and its recorded wind speed was 160 per hour where as that of the Cyclone Dana’s is expected to be confined to 100-120 km/ hour. Thus, the cyclone Dana and its hitting effect will be weaker than the former one.
However he said, the maximum impact of the Cyclone Dana will be experienced in Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore districts of Odisha and East Medinipur in West Bengal.
Apart from it, several secondary category districts in the West Bengal in cluding Jhargram where impact is also expected to be violent as heavy rainfall and stormy wind is likely there.
In Odisha, heavy rainfall is also likely in Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, Cuttack, and Bhubaneswar accompanied with gusty winds, said the latest newscast issued by the IMD Regional Center Bhubaneswar.
