New Delhi, March 13: Union Health Minister JP Nadda underscored the importance of raising awareness about kidney health and preventing kidney-related diseases on the occasion of World Kidney Day, observed annually on March 13.
Highlighting the significance of early detection, Nadda spoke about the Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Programme (PMNDP) and its impact in providing life-saving treatment to millions across India.
“As we mark #WorldKidneyDay, it is essential to spread awareness about kidney health, early detection, and prevention of kidney-related ailments,” Nadda stated in a post on the social media platform X.
He further emphasized the government’s commitment to healthcare access, mentioning how thousands of dialysis centers have been set up nationwide under PMNDP, benefiting countless patients.
“Under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, the PMNDP has revolutionized dialysis care in India, ensuring treatment reaches those in need,” he added.
Chronic Kidney Disease: A Growing Concern
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a progressive condition where the kidneys lose their ability to filter waste and excess fluids from the blood. The disease is a rising public health crisis in India, with over 100,000 new cases of kidney failure annually.
Despite affecting one in ten adults, early detection remains low, often leading to severe complications such as hyperkalemia (high potassium levels), which increases the risk of heart failure.
A recent Nephrology journal study analyzing data from 2011 to 2023 highlighted a sharp increase in CKD cases across India. The prevalence among individuals aged 15 and above rose from 11.2% (2011-2017) to 16.38% (2018-2023).
The study also pointed out a rural-urban disparity, with 15.34% of rural populations affected compared to 10.65% in urban areas.
Link to Diabetes and Obesity
Experts warn that kidney health is closely linked to diabetes and obesity, two of the leading causes of CKD. Since the disease progresses silently, millions remain unaware until complications become severe, leading to a reduced quality of life and increased healthcare costs.
Government’s Five-Step Approach to Kidney Health
The Ministry of Health has urged people to prioritize kidney health and shared five essential steps for maintaining kidney function:
- Regular exercise
- Staying hydrated
- Managing blood sugar levels
- Limiting salt intake
- 5)Avoiding tobacco and alcohol
With early detection, proactive management, and better treatment access, India can tackle the growing burden of CKD and improve public health outcomes.
