Chandigarh, January 19: 121 farmers, who had been on a fast-unto-death at the Khanauri protest site in support of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, called off their indefinite hunger strike on Sunday after Dallewal agreed to receive medical assistance.
Dallewal, 70, had been refusing medical help since initiating his fast-unto-death on November 26. However, he consented to medical aid on Saturday after the government extended an invitation for talks scheduled for February 14 to address the farmers’ demands.
As Dallewal's health worsened and the government failed to meet their demands, 121 farmers joined his fast on January 15, setting up their protest on the Haryana side of the Khanauri border. On January 17, 10 more farmers from Haryana joined the demonstration.
