A significant seismic event has occurred near Tonga. A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the region, triggering a tsunami warning and raising a concern as just few days back an earthquake hit Myanmar.
Earthquake Details
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reports that the earthquake occurred approximately 100 kilometers northeast of Tonga's main island. The quake struck early Monday local time.
Following the earthquake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning about the potential for hazardous waves. Coastal areas within 300 kilometers of the epicenter could be affected.
Current Situation
Fortunately, initial reports indicate no immediate damage or casualties.
Tonga, a Polynesian nation of 171 islands with a population slightly over 100,000 (mainly on Tongatapu), is situated more than 3,500 kilometers from Australia's east coast. Its location within the Pacific Ring of Fire makes it susceptible to both earthquakes and tsunamis.
Authorities are keeping a close eye on the situation, updates will be available as things happen.
