Bhubaneswar: Man cuts off brother’s hand over property dispute; locals attack police during arrest

Bhubaneswar, Mar 31: In a gruesome incident, a man allegedly severed his younger brother’s hand over a property dispute in Bharatpur area of Bhubaneswar last night.
The accused has been identified as Surya Maharana and the incident has been reported from Banadurga slum in Bharatpur.
As per reports, a heated exchange of words ensued between Surya and his brother Ashok Maharana over a property dispute related to their house. It later took a violent turn when Surya, in a fit of rage, attacked Ashok with a sharp edged weapon.
Ashok sustained grievous injuries in the attack and his hand was severed. Following the gruesome attack, Surya attempted to hide in a nearby house.
After learning about the incident, enraged locals caught him and thrashed him black and blue.
The situation got worse when the police, upon getting the information, arrived at the scene to arrest Surya. A crowd attacked the officers, injuring a female Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) and a driver. The locals also damaged a police vehicle and pelted stones.
Despite the chaos, the police arrested Surya along with two others involved in the violence.
Further investigation into the incident was underway.
