This isn't your typical train journey with a pantry car churning out overpriced meals. The Sachkhand Express, which runs between Amritsar and Nanded, carries with it a legacy of generosity and community spirit, offering passengers a taste of the Sikh concept of "langar" – a free community kitchen where everyone is welcome, regardless of background or social status.
A journey fueled by faith and food
The Sachkhand Express traverses a distance of 2,081 km, connecting Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar with Sri Hazur Sahib in Nanded, two revered pilgrimage sites for Sikhs. During this 33 plus hour journey, the train makes 39 stops, and at six of these stations, passengers are greeted with a heart warming sight – volunteers serving hot, wholesome meals as part of the langar tradition.
This tradition, which began in 1995, has continued uninterrupted for over 29 years, serving as a testament to the Sikh community's commitment to selfless service and hospitality. Every day, approximately 2,000 passengers, traveling in both general and AC coaches, partake in this unique langar, enjoying dishes like kadhi-chawal, dal, and sabzi, all prepared with love and offered free of charge.
