Puri, Ap 9: The annual extravaganza celebration of ‘Sahi Jata’ steeped in the folklore and mythology of the region, takes place during the auspicious month of Chaitra. It enthralls both locals and visitors with its vibrant pageantry and captivating storytelling.
Sahi Jata stands as a tribute to culture, tradition, and community, welcoming all to immerse themselves in the rich heritage of this charming coastal district.
Traditionally, seven sahis i.e.Kalikadebi Sahi, Goudabada Sahi, Harachandi Sahi, Markandeswar Sahi, Dolamandap Sahi, Bali Sahi, and Kundeibeta Sahi—present proposals to the Jagannath Temple to observe Sahi Jata.
Street performances, organized by Sata Sahi Akhadas, feature individuals portraying various characters from the Ramayan, spanning from the birth of Lord Ram to the defeat of the demon king Ravana. Notably, characters like Parsurama and Ravana are accompanied by elaborate decorative structures called 'medhas.
These medhas parade through the seven oldest streets of the sacred city, where they dance gracefully despite their considerable size.
Sahi Jata epitomizes the spirit of unity, cooperation, and communal harmony. It transcends caste, creed, and social hierarchies, embracing all who reside within its fold. Each Sahi (locality) within Puri district boasts its unique identity, yet all are bound by the common thread of devotion and camaraderie.
