New Delhi, April 24: The Congress Working Committee (CWC) has called for a thorough investigation into the intelligence and security failures that led to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. In a resolution passed during its Thursday meeting, the CWC expressed deep shock and condemned the attack, stressing the need for accountability.
"Pahalgam, a region with a three-tier security arrangement, falls directly under the Union Home Ministry’s jurisdiction. A comprehensive probe into the lapses that allowed this attack is essential in the public interest and to ensure justice for the victims’ families," the resolution stated.
Highlighting the nature of the attack, the CWC alleged that the terrorists specifically targeted Hindus with the intent to provoke communal unrest. “This deliberate targeting was aimed at inciting passions. We urge the nation to remain calm and united in the face of such a provocation,” the party appealed.
Blaming Pakistan for orchestrating the assault, the CWC described it as a "cowardly and calculated" act of cross-border terrorism. “This attack is a direct assault on the values of the Republic,” it said, reaffirming the Congress party’s commitment to fight terrorism with determination and unity.
The committee also paid tribute to the bravery of local pony handlers and tourist guides, one of whom was martyred while protecting tourists. “Their courage exemplifies the indomitable spirit of India,” the resolution said.
With the annual Amarnath Yatra approaching, the CWC urged the government to bolster security measures urgently to safeguard pilgrims and support the local population dependent on tourism.
The Congress also criticized the BJP for allegedly exploiting the tragedy for political gain. “It is deeply troubling that the BJP, through its official and proxy channels, is using this national tragedy to foster division. At a time when unity is paramount, such actions are unacceptable,” the resolution concluded.
