Bhubaneswar, Apr 21: Daytime temperature is likely to cross 45 degrees Celsius on April 24 and 25 across Odisha, particularly in Western districts, predicted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday.
According to the IMD prediction, the heat-wave condition is likely to intensify and mercury could potentially rise by another 4 degrees Celsius in the coming days.
Many cities in Western Odisha are already seeing temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius.
On Sunday, Jharsuguda recorded the highest temperature at 43.5°C, followed by Balangir at 42.5°C and Titlagarh at 42°C. Bhubaneswar was slightly cooler at 37.5°C, but it felt hotter because of the high humidity.
According to the IMD, Bhubaneswar was hotter on Sunday than the day before, with humidity staying above 60% all day. At 8:30 am, the temperature was 31°C with 81% humidity. By 11:30 am, it rose to 35.2°C with 67% humidity, and at 2:30 pm, it reached 37°C with 61% humidity.
Meanwhile, several districts including Ganjam, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Malkangiri, Koraput, Bargarh, Nabarangapur, Nayagarh, Boudh, Balangir, and Bhadrak saw thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds blowing at 40–50 km/h.
On the other hand, two people died in Balangir district after lightning struck them.
