Deities to get new herbal make-up in Puri Jagannath temple

Puri, Aug 11: Banakalagi rituals or face make-up rituals in Jagannath temple of Puri will be performed by the servitors on Wednesday. The deities will bedeck with divine apparel and the Srimukhas (Faces of the deities) will gloss with aromatic and smooth enamels prepared with herbal extracts. According to sources, general darshan of the deities will be restricted for about four hours from 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm. The rituals will be performed by the temple servitors. As per the Jagannath cult, the Dutta Mohapatra Sevakas (Servitors) perform the rituals. Different types of natural colors like Hingula, Haritala, Kasturi, Keshar, glue of Kaintha are used to prepare a Banaka, which was polished for decorating the faces of the sibling deities. However, no devotees were allowed inside the temple for darshan of the deities, informed the Shri Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA). On the other hand, only the servitors are allowed for darshan during Banakalagi Niti.
