The Delhi SG Pipers have made a major splash in the inaugural Women's Hockey India League (HIL) by signing England's star midfielder, Lily Owsley. This exciting acquisition brings a wealth of experience and talent to the team, as they prepare to compete against the best in the league.
Owsley, a two-time Olympic medalist, is a force to be reckoned with on the hockey field. Her speed, skill, and leadership qualities make her a valuable asset to any team. She has a decorated career, including a gold medal at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. Owsley has also tasted success at the Commonwealth Games, winning gold in Birmingham 2022 and silver in Glasgow 2014.
Replacement
Owsley joins the Delhi SG Pipers as a replacement for Dutch midfielder Xan de Waard, who withdrew from the league due to personal reasons. While losing de Waard is undoubtedly a setback, the acquisition of Owsley is a major coup for the team.
"Losing Xan de Waard is tough, but signing a two-time Olympic medalist like Lily Owsley is a huge boost," said Delhi SG Pipers women's team coach Dave Smolenaars. "She brings experience, leadership, and a dynamic style of play that will elevate our team."
Women's HIL set to take off
The inaugural Women's HIL, scheduled to begin on December 28th, will feature four teams: Odisha Warriors, Rarh Bengal Tigers, Soorma Hockey Club, and the Delhi SG Pipers. The tournament will culminate in a final in Ranchi on February 1st next year.
With the addition of Owsley, the Delhi SG Pipers are poised to be a strong contender in the league. Her presence on the field will not only boost the team's performance but also inspire young Indian players.
