Foxconn, the Taiwanese electronics manufacturing giant renowned for assembling iPhones, has made a significant investment in its India operations. The company has acquired machinery and equipment valued at $31.8 million (approximately Rs 267 crore) for its factory in Tamil Nadu. This procurement is a strategic move in preparation for the manufacturing of the iPhone 16 Pro series at this facility.

The acquisition marks a significant milestone, as it represents the first time that Apple's high-end iPhone Pro series will be manufactured outside of China. Foxconn's subsidiary, Foxconn Hon Hai Technology India Mega Development Private Limited, announced the acquisition of machinery and equipment from APPLE OPERATIONS LIMITED.

Sources familiar with the matter indicate that this procurement is aimed at increasing capacity at Foxconn's Tamil Nadu unit, specifically for the production of the iPhone 16 Pro series smartphones. This move aligns with Apple's broader strategy of diversifying its manufacturing operations and reducing its reliance on China as the sole production hub for its high-end devices.

Earlier this month, Apple made a significant announcement, revealing that it will soon begin rolling out its first-ever "made in India" iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max series. The supply of these devices is anticipated to commence late this month or early November, marking a significant milestone for Apple's manufacturing presence in India.

The acquisition of equipment by Foxconn and the impending rollout of the iPhone 16 Pro series made in India underscore the company's commitment to expanding its manufacturing capabilities in the country.
