Bhubaneswar, January 19: A recent study by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) has revealed traces of lithium, a metal used in the production of glass, aluminum, and batteries, in some districts of Odisha, according to a senior GSI official.

Lithium reserves have already been discovered in parts of Karnataka and Jammu and Kashmir. While the current findings in Odisha are not definitive, the GSI has noted some geological indications of its presence, particularly in the Eastern Ghat belt, which includes areas like Nayagarh. "We are still in the very preliminary stages, and it’s important not to make any claims at this point. However, certain geological signs are pointing to lithium in this region," said Pankaj Kumar, Deputy Director General of the GSI.

Kumar made these comments during a GSI meeting held ahead of the two-day National Mines Ministers' Conference in Konark, which is set to begin on Monday.

Should lithium be confirmed in Odisha, it could lead to significant industrial developments, such as the establishment of electric vehicle manufacturing plants in the state, a potential boost for the local economy.

Union Mines Secretary V L Kantha Rao further highlighted the GSI’s efforts in conducting comprehensive surveys of Odisha's mineral resources, employing advanced methods including drone technology. The GSI is also incorporating artificial intelligence to enhance its mineral exploration capabilities, targeting valuable resources like lithium and copper.

“Drone-based technology has made the survey process faster and more efficient,” said Rao. He also noted that two pilot projects have been initiated in Rajasthan and Mayurbhanj district in Odisha. In addition, the GSI plans to intensify mineral survey activities in regions where mining operations have been suspended for years.

Rao praised Odisha’s mining operations, stating that they have become a model for the entire country.
