Bhubaneswar: In Hindi cinema, she has been the quintessential Punjabi Kudi (girl). Amrita Singh is known for her outgoing and charming personality.

She has s string of iconic films like Betab, Sunny, Mard, Chameli Ki Shadi, Naam, Waaris, Khudgarz, Aaina, 2 States, et al to her credit.

She is known as one of the most popular and versatile actresses of Hindi cinema who has worked in more than 50 films in her career of over three decades.

AMRITA SINGH CONGRESS PARTY CONNECTION

Amrita was born on 9 February 1958 to Rukhsana Sultana and Shivinder Singh Virk, an army officer. Rukhsana   was known as a political associate of Sanjay Gandhi during the Indian Emergency in the 1970s.

She was the face of Sanjay Gandhi's sterilisation campaign in Muslim areas of Old Delhi.

Amrita’s father belonged to a Sikh family from Punjab. She has been the great-granddaughter of Sobha Singh, one of the builders of New Delhi, and the grandniece of the late novelist Khushwant Singh, and also the great-grandniece of well known Punjab politician Ujjal Singh.

The actress Begum Para was her grandmother Zarina Sultana's sister.

FILMY DEBUT

Amrita Singh made her Hindi cinema debut in 1983 with Rahul Rawail's teen romance Betaab (1983), in which she was the heroine of Sunny Deol. The film is remembered for the chemistry of the lead pair and the beautiful music, which consists of songs like "Jab Ham Jawan Honge," "Badal Yun Garajta Hai," "Tumne Dee Awaaz," and "Apne Dil Se Badi Dushmani Ki."

This was quickly followed by a succession of hits, such as "Sunny (1984)," with Sunny Deol, "Duniya (1984)," opposite Rishi Kapoor, and "Saaheb (1985)," opposite Anil Kapoor.

In 1985, she was cast in Manmohan Desai's period drama "Mard" opposite Amitabh Bachchan, which was the biggest hit of 1985. In the film, she played the role of Ruby, an arrogant rich girl who falls in love with a tonga wallah. The success of the film established her as one of the top actresses of the Hindi film industry.

In 1986, she starred opposite Anil Kapoor in Basu Chatterjee's classic comedy "Chameli Ki Shaadi (1986)," which is perhaps her most loved film to date. The film, known for its hilarious plots and sequences, has been a laugh riot and considered a cult classic.

Amrita Singh married actor Saif Ali Khan in 1991, who was twelve years younger than her. After marriage, she took a break from acting. The couple had two children together: Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan. But both divorced in 2004 after thirteen years of marriage.
