Bengaluru, March 8: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has condemned the Hampi rape incident as a "heinous crime" and directed police to take swift action. The attack took place on March 6 near the Hampi heritage site in Vijayanagara district, where three men allegedly raped two women, including an Israeli national.
The Chief Minister confirmed that two suspects have been arrested and investigations are ongoing. "Ensuring the safety of every individual, including tourists, is our priority," he stated.
Congress MP GC Chandrashekhar termed the incident "unfortunate," while Deputy CM DK Shivakumar assured that legal action would be taken. Karnataka Mahila Congress President Sowmya Reddy also emphasized the need for stronger safety measures.
According to police, the victims were stargazing near the Tungabhadra Canal when the accused approached them under the pretext of asking for petrol. The situation escalated when the victims refused to give money, leading to a violent assault. The attackers allegedly raped the women and pushed three male tourists into the canal.
A case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023 for attempt to murder, robbery, and rape. Koppal SP Ram Arasiddi confirmed the arrest of two suspects, Sai Mallu and Chethan Sai, while a third accused remains at large. Authorities have assured strict action against the culprits.
