Buttler Guides Gujarat Titans to Record Chase Victory
Gujarat Titans (GT) returned to the top of – 2025 Indian Premier League table after executing their first successful chase of a 200-plus total at their Ahmedabad home ground on Saturday, April 19th. Anchored by a magnificent unbeaten innings from Jos Buttler, the Titans overcame the Delhi Capitals (DC) in a match that provided late tension before being sealed efficiently.
Batting first after losing the toss, Delhi Capitals compiled a competitive total of 203 for 8. Their innings had a useful contribution from Axar Patel (39) and Ashutosh Sharma (37), who provided momentum during different phases. However, Gujarat Titans' bowler Prasidh Krishna delivered an excellent spell amidst the scoring, claiming impressive figures of 4 for 4.
Buttler’s Record Chase
Gujarat Titans' pursuit of 204 was masterfully coordinated by Jos Buttler even after keeping wicket for 20 overs in the afternoon heat, Buttler played the anchor role finishing unbeaten on 97 off just 54 balls. He built crucial partnerships, initially adding 60 runs with Sai Sudharsan, and later combining for a decisive 119-run stand with Sherfane Rutherford, who contributed a valuable 43 runs. Buttler paced the chase, ensuring GT remained on course despite the target.
While the chase was largely controlled, with some effective death bowling from Delhi, particularly Mukesh Kumar's wide yorkers, created a slightly tensed run rate, leaving Gujarat needing ten runs from the final over from Mitchell Starc. Rahul Tewatia hit a six of the the first delivery and guided the second past the wicketkeeper for four, sealing the victory with four balls remaining. This was Gujarat Titans’ – first successful chase exceeding 200 at the Narendra Modi Stadium and pushed Gujarat Titans back to the top position on the IPL 2025 points table.
