Khandagiri Mela set to begin from February 6: Know details, regulations

Bhubaneswar, Jan 30: The highly anticipated Khandagiri Mela and Jatra, often called the Kumbha Mela of Bhubaneswar, is all set to kick off on February 6. This vibrant and culturally rich fair will run for 12 days and showcases a unique blend of local culture, commerce, and spirituality.

Also known as the Magha Mela, the event is a much-loved tradition that draws visitors from all around to explore a selection of products. Local farmers and producers will be selling everything from household items to fresh agricultural produce, giving visitors a true taste of regional goods.

One of the major highlights of the festival will be the Jatra performances, a traditional form of open-air theater. From February 6 to February 17, audiences can enjoy performances by at least 10 opera troupes, each bringing their storytelling style to the stage.

The origins of the fair date back to the gathering of sadhus at the Khandagiri and Udayagiri hills, giving the event a deep spiritual significance that continues to resonate today.

The organizers, working closely with local mutts and government agencies, are putting in determined efforts to ensure the fair runs smoothly, offering a memorable experience for everyone who attends.

A key ritual this year will be the Holy Water from the “Gupta Ganga” spring within the caves, marking a special moment in the spiritual celebrations of Khandagiri Mela 2025.

In an effort to maintain a family-friendly atmosphere, the government has also decided to regulate the types of dance performances allowed during the Jatra this year, aiming to reduce any inappropriate content.
