Bhubaneswar, October 25: Landfall of the severe Cyclonic Storm Dana begins in the Odisha coast, informed IMD.
According to the recent newscast of the IMD Regional Centre in Bhubaneswar the severe cyclonic system is moving nearer the Dhamara coast which is likely to toss the ground somewhere between the Dhamra and the Sagar Island in West Bengal.
The severe cyclonic storm “DANA” generated over northwest Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards with a speed of 15 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centred at 2330 hrs IST of yesterday, the 24th October, over the same region, near latitude 20.5° N and longitude 87.1°E, about 50 km east-northeast of Paradip (Odisha), 40 km south-southeast of Dhamara (Odisha) and 160 km southwest of Sagar Island (West Bengal).
It is very likely to move north-northwestwards and cross north Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar Island close to Bhitarkanika and Dhamara (Odisha) during next 3 to 4 hours as a severe Cyclonic Storm with a wind speed of 100-110 kmph gusting 120 kmph.
Landfall process has commenced and the forward sector of the wall cloud region is entering into land. The landfall process would continue till today, the 25th October morning.
The system is under continuous surveillance of the Doppler Weather Radar at Paradip, the IMD mentioned in its recently issued bulletin.
At about 10.30 PM on Thursday, the Cyclone system was about 50 km east of Paradip coast in Odisha and 60 km south-southeast of Dhamara (Odisha) and 170 km south-southwest of Sagar Island in West Bengal at 10.30 pm.
It is very likely to continue to move north-northwest wards and cross north Odisha West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar islands close to Bhitarkanika and Dhamara in Odisha during mid-night of October 24 and morning of October 25 as a severe cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 100-110 km per hour gusting 120 km per hour.
Tides upto 2 metre high is expected in Paradip and Dhamara coast after midnight. The landfall will have impact for six hours in Odisha.
The severe cyclonic storm is likely to re-curve slightly towards west and west-southwards after landfall, triggering rain in southern Odisha till October 26, Bhubaneswar IMD Director Manorama Mohanty said.
Odisha Chief Minister conducted a late night review of the situation at 10.30 pm in the office of Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) in presence of Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari and senior officials. Earlier, Majhi took stock of relief materials going to the Red Cross Bhawan.
Warning: IMD has issued a ‘red warning’ (take action) for heavy to very heavy rainfall and wind speed of 100 kmph to 110 kmph for four coastal districts of Odisha – Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur tonight.
