Magh Bihu

Magh Nihu kicks off with ‘Tekeli’ wherein  a blindfolded man, stick in hand, moves forward with measured steps with laughter and shouts erupting from the crowd. Some offer helpful guidance, while others playfully mislead him. Hanging overhead is an earthen pot, the "tekeli," concealing a mysterious treasure. With a single, confident swing, the pot shatters, showering puffed rice and jaggery onto the ground as cheers fills the air. This is Tekeli Bonga, the pot-breaking ritual of Assam's Magh Bihu festival.

Magh Bihu a time for laughter, play, and sharing abundance of the harvest, this tradition is only one cultural event they have during ‘Magh Bihu’. ‘Magh Bihu’ brings back ancient customs when everyone comes out and partakes in the events to enjoy the bountiful harvest.

Magh Bihu, celebrated in mid-January also known as Bhogali Bihu, marks the end of the harvest season in Assam. It is a time when everyone expresses gratitude for the bounty of the fields, through Uruka, the night of communal feasting. Families and neighbors gather to prepare elaborate meals in makeshift bamboo huts called "bhelaghars," which are then burned the next morning in a symbolic act of renewal.

The "meji," a traditional bonfire, is another significant aspect of Magh Bihu. People light the meji on the morning of Bihu and seek its blessings. Magh Bihu is more than just rituals. Music, dance, and indigenous traditional games are the activities that connect the Assamese people to their agrarian roots. This fosters a sense of community and shared affinity to traditions.

In current year – 2025 ‘Magh Bihu’ falls on January 15th, and the celebrations spans for seven days. It kicks off with ‘Bhogali Uruka’, the night of feasts, followed by other rituals, games and joyous community gatherings.

While the feasting and bonfires are central to Magh Bihu, traditional games and sports add another layer of excitement and cultural significance. Buffalo fighting, and the egg fight, or "Koni Juj," where contestants tap hard-boiled eggs against each other until one emerges victorious.  The game is played by two people, one holding an egg vertically another tapping from top. The one whose egg breaks loses and the winner takes the broken egg as prize.

Magh Bihu is so captivating from smashing a pot in Tekeli Bonga, that of buffalo fighting, or an egg fight, each moment is a enjoyment and gratitude for the abundance. Communities are finding creative ways to honor traditions while embracing sustainability. All said and done Magh Bihu is a festival of joy, renewal, and shared humanity, a time to connect with loved ones, celebrate the harvest, and look out for a new tomorrow.
