Bhubaneswar: Modi wave demolished the Kejriwal wall in Delhi. Finally, the impregnable fortress.of Arvind Kejriwal fell to Modi.
The fight between Modi and Kejriwal ended in a bitter note for Kejriwal.
The former IRS officer who rose to became the HERO of AAM ADMI (Common Man) was defeated in his bastion.
When after 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the lacklusture show of Modi-fied BJP at the hustings and the rise of INDI alliance had led to the writing of epitaph for the Modi wave or Modi magic that was sweeping across the country since 2014, many political pundits had then declared – Modi power peaked. And the downslide heralded. The fall of BJP has begun.
MODI’S EVER PEAKING WAVE
But the biggest irony of Indian polity has been the theory of ‘Peaking Power’ turned upside down in the very year of Lok Sabha elections.
Modi wave swept Haryana and Maharashtra. BJP registered HISTORIC win in both the states.
But many opinion polls before Delhi elections have predicted non-breaching of KejriWall in Delhi.
The reason has been that ever since the country had stood in awe at the Modi wave, the BJP kept winning state after states, except Delhi.
KejriWALL deflated the Modi Wave in 2015 and 2020. And Aam Admi Party won huge mandate with around 54-53% popular vote share.
In 2015 Delhi elections, despite peaking Modi wave, BJP saw its popular vote share trumped down to historic low of 32%.
However, the Modi wave was seen gaining force since 2020 onwards, when in the Delhi Assembly elections, AAP, despite winning big displayed the ‘Peaking power’ theory when its popular vote share recorded a marginal drop, but BJP registered its best ever vote share since 1993. The saffron party grabbed 38% vote share.
WHEN AAP MISSED THE SIGNAL TO ENJOY ABSOLUTE POWER!
The BIG rise in popular vote share of BJP in the 2020 elections showed Modi wave gaining strength in Delhi. AAP missed the signal and enjoyed the absolute power.
As the AAM ADMI PARTY gets embroiled in a series of scams anchored by Liquorgate and Sheesmahal, the Modi wave steered BJP to full throttle to register historic win. And regain the power seat of Delhi after a gap of 27-long years.
BJP RECORDS POPULAR VOTE SHARE
The 2025 Delhi polls have been historic for BJP as the saffron party has this time topped the party’s highest ever vote share secured in 1993.
In the first Delhi Assembly elections, under the party veteran Madan lal Khurana, BJP swept Delhi with a popular vote share of 42.8%. The then ruling Congress party at the centre trailed with little over 34% votes.
BJP vote share has never ever hovered around the 1993 popular vote share. The saffron party had a vote share of below 36% since 1998 Assembly polls. In 2020, the northward movement of popular vote share seen, and in 2025, the vote share of the saffron party apparently touched a new glory.
BJP VOTE SHARES:
- 1993 – 42.8%
- 1998 – 34%
- 2003 – 35.22%
- 2008 – 36.34%
- 2013 – 33%
- 2015 – 32.3%
- 2020 – 38.51%
As per the Election Commission of India data, the popular vote share of BJP has been at around 47% (46.88).
A glance at the trends suggests that BJP would finish the tally with 50 seats to AAP’s 20. And, Congress drawing a blank with 6.31% vote share.
CONGRESS VOTE SHARE UP
The GOP (grand old party) Congress had hits its nadir in popular vote share in year 2020, when its vote share touched the historic low of 4.3%
The ECI data, as on past midday, stood at 6.4%. The party seems to have gained a 2% more vote in the 2025 elections.
What needs mentioning is the GOP’s highest vote share had been highest in 2003 when it had grabbed a whopping 48% vote share.
The rise in vote share need to be taken in right perspective by the Party leader and LOP Rahul Gandhi, and capitalise on it to wean the congress voters shifted to AAP. The party need to put more hard work on the ground, because the party’s vote share has been in single digits.
