Sambalpur, Sept 1: Western Odisha started observing the agrarian festival ‘Nuakhai’ with a traditional fervor on Thursday. The festival is being observed as per the scheduled lagna. The prime ritual of the festival- the Nuakhai ‘Nabanna’- has been offered to Maa Samalei (Samaleswari) in the Samaleswari Temple at Sambalpur town and Maa Pataneswari in Balangir this morning. Servitors offered the Nabanna, a pudding prepared from newly harvested paddy at about 11 am. After eating the Nabanna, people would observe Juhar Bhetghat (juniors offer pranam to seniors and then they embrace each other as a mark of respect and affection). Apart from Nabanna, various kinds of cakes and sweets are also offered to deities in houses. Cultural programs are also being held during afternoon hours. The oral tradition of Nuakhai dates back to the 12th century when this festival was celebrated by Chauhan Raja Ramai Deo at Patanagarh, which is currently in the Balangir district.
