Panchvati Express Gets India's First Onboard ATM

Accessing cash while travelling by train has taken a fresh turn in India. In a first-of-its-kind initiative for Indian Railways, an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) has been installed aboard the Mumbai-Manmad Panchvati Express, marking a significant step towards enhancing passenger convenience.

A Unique Facility

The ATM facility, provided by the Bank of Maharashtra, is located within an AC chair car coach of the popular express train (Train No. 12109). Officials confirmed that the installation is complete, and the service will soon be available to passengers travelling between Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Manmad Junction – a journey of approximately 4 hours and 35 minutes.

The machine has been strategically placed at the rear end of the coach, occupying a cubicle space often used as a small pantry area. To ensure security and ease of use during transit, the ATM kiosk is protected by a shutter door.

Collaboration and Implementation

This unique project stems from the Innovative & Non-Fare Ideas Scheme, - a collaboration between the Bhusawal division of Central Railway and the Bank of Maharashtra. The necessary modifications to accommodate the ATM were carried out at the Manmad Railway Workshop. This involved making adequate electrical provisions and structural adjustments to ensure the machine remains fully operational and stable while the train is in motion.

Chief Public Relations Officer for Central Railway, Dr Swapnil Nila, confirmed the successful installation, stating, "This is a unique initiative, and we are hopeful it will serve as a valuable convenience for passengers."

The introduction of an ATM onboard the Panchvati Express is a novel try out aimed at improving the travel experience. While currently limited to this specific service, its success could potentially pave the way for similar facilities on other long-distance trains across the Indian Railways network, offering passengers unprecedented access to banking services during their journey.
