Tragedy in Odisha: Woman killed, one injured in elephant attack in Bargarh

Bargarh, April 16: In a tragic incident, a woman trampled to death and another woman critically injured in elephant attack. The incident took place in Turcha village under Gaisilet police limits in Odisha’s Bargarh district.

The injured woman was admitted to Gaisilet CHC then shifted to Burla Medical as her condition worsened.

According to reports, the wild elephant had entered the village in search of food, prompting the forest department to issue a warning to the residents. Despite the alert, two women went into the forest to collect Mahua flowers, where they were suddenly attacked by the elephant. One woman died on the spot, while the other was critically injured and later rescued by villagers.

Being informed, forest officials and police reached the spot, seized the body and started investigation into the incident.

On April 11, a woman died after being attacked by an elephant in Odisha’s Khordha.  The incident occurred while the woman identified as Basanti Routray had gone to the backyard of her house to collect cashew nuts.

On March 29, a man identified as Dhabal Nayak of Budhakhaman in Deogarh was trampled to death by an elephant. The incident occurred while Dhabak had gone to the nearby forest to collect Mahua flowers in the morning. When he did not return home by noon, his family members got worried and searched for him. During the search, they found his body in the forest.

On March 18, a woman was killed while her husband and children suffered injuries after being attacked by an elephant at Tileipasi village under Kundeigola forest section of Reamal range in the district.

The Odisha government recently revealed that as many as 1,209 people were killed due to elephant attacks between 2014-15 and 2024-25 in the state.
