Mysuru, April 26: Amid growing tensions following the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday expressed opposition to any calls for war with Pakistan.
He instead highlighted concerns over a "security lapse" in the attack, which claimed 26 lives and left several others injured.
Speaking to reporters, Siddaramaiah emphasized the need for enhanced security in the Kashmir Valley.
"There has been a security lapse in this incident. We are not in favour of war. Steps should be taken to strengthen security in the region. The central government must ensure peace in Kashmir through increased security measures," he said.
The Chief Minister also stated that his government would act on the Centre's directive to repatriate Pakistani nationals currently residing in Karnataka. "We will take necessary steps to send back Pakistani citizens as per the instructions of the central government. Efforts will be made to collect information about their presence in different cities across the state," he added.
Siddaramaiah's remarks drew sharp criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly, R. Ashoka, accused the Chief Minister of lacking understanding of the situation.
"The Pahalgam attack was carried out by Pakistani-sponsored Islamic terrorists. This is not merely a national security issue—it challenges India's sovereignty. At such a time, the nation must stand united," Ashoka said.
He pointed out that the Central Government had already convened an all-party meeting to ensure a unified response and had received support from leaders across party lines, including the Congress.
"Our professional armed forces are fully capable of handling such situations. They do not need unsolicited advice. Instead of commenting on matters of national security, focus should be on identifying and deporting illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, Rohingya, and Pakistan who are unlawfully residing in the state," Ashoka added.
The country continues to mourn the tragic loss of 26 lives in the Pahalgam terror attack, which has also left many wounded.
