Kandhamal, Feb 9: In a midnight heist, some miscreants allegedly looted three gold ornaments and the donation box (Hundi) from Shree Jagannath temple in Phulbani town of Odisha’s Kandhamal district late last night.
As per reports, the thieves barged into the temple by breaking the doors. They later gained access to the inner sanctum and decamped with three gold ornaments from the forehead of the Trinity and the donation box.
The incident came to fore when the chief priest of the temple arrived this morning and discovered that the hundi was missing. Subsequently, he found that the gold ornaments, which adorned the forehead of the Trinity, were also missing.
He immediately informed the temple management committee, which later filed a complaint at the Town police station.
Upon getting the information, police arrived at the scene and launched an investigation into the matter. The cops recovered the hundi from behind the temple which was broken and empty.
The hundi was believed to have lakhs of rupees, which was collected during the recent inauguration of a new temple dedicated to the side deity.
CCTV footage is being reviewed and efforts are on to nab the culprits involved, said the police.
