Bhubaneswar, February 11: The Odisha Government is intensifying efforts to improve road safety and reduce accidents. A high-level review meeting, led by Principal Secretary of the Commerce and Transport Department, Usha Padhee, focused on evaluating ongoing initiatives and discussing new strategies for safer roads.
The meeting highlighted areas needing immediate attention, including fixing black spots, expanding the Intelligent Enforcement Management System (IEMS), and complying with Supreme Court guidelines. Rising road accidents, especially in mining areas, were noted as a concern, prompting calls for stricter enforcement and improved emergency response.
Technical partner IIT Madras presented data-driven solutions such as crash investigations, awareness campaigns, and training for enforcement personnel. A four-pronged approach involving engineering, enforcement, education, and emergency care was reviewed, with progress in highway patrolling and trauma care acknowledged. Challenges like delayed e-challan disposal and inadequate enforcement resources were identified.
Priority actions include expanding IEMS, increasing patrolling vehicles, establishing more driving training centers, and strengthening district safety plans. The government is also amending the Odisha Motor Vehicle Rules to include provisions for canceling the licenses of habitual offenders. Additionally, a system to integrate accident data across platforms is in progress.
To enhance safety further, the government plans to provide financial assistance for installing Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in transport vehicles, as announced by the Chief Minister.
Usha Padhee reiterated Odisha’s commitment to reducing road traffic deaths and injuries by 50% by 2030, aligning with national and global safety targets. Key officials from various departments and IIT Madras participated in the meeting held at Kharabela Bhawan.
