Bhubaneswar, Dec 2: Cyber criminals managed to defraud people in Odisha of a staggering Rs 125 crore in three years between 2021 and 2023, informed Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday.
Responding to a question raised by BJD MLA Prasanta Behera, the Chief Minister informed the state assembly that the total amount lost to cyber fraud in the state amounted to Rs 125,63,17,674 over the three-year period. However, only Rs 2.52 crore was successfully recovered.
Majhi provided further details, mentioning that during this time, 6,368 cybercrime cases were registered, and 1,388 cyber criminals were apprehended. The breakdown of cases filed each year showed 2,037 in 2021, 1,983 in 2022, and 2,348 in 2023, with corresponding arrests of 425, 441, and 522 individuals.
In terms of financial losses, cyber fraudsters took Rs 40,39,70,514 in 2021, Rs 37,28,96,982 in 2022, and Rs 47,94,50,178 in 2023.
However, the police managed to return Rs 27,56,138 to victims in 2021, Rs 97,30,582 in 2022, and Rs 1,52,59,965 in 2023.
