New Delhi, January 29: A parliamentary panel has adopted its report on the Waqf Amendment Bill with a majority vote, incorporating changes proposed by the ruling BJP members. This move has sparked strong criticism from the opposition, who argue that it aims to dismantle the Waqf boards.
The Joint Committee of Parliament (JPC), which is reviewing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, passed the report by a 15-11 vote. The committee is chaired by BJP member Jagdambika Pal, and opposition members have submitted dissent notes in response to the adoption.
BJP representatives defended the bill, which was introduced in the Lok Sabha last August, asserting that it aims to modernize and ensure greater transparency and accountability in the management of Waqf properties. However, opposition parties have condemned the bill, claiming that it infringes upon the constitutional rights of the Muslim community and unduly interferes with the operations of the Waqf boards.
