Bhubaneswar: The Appointments Committee of the Modi Cabinet has approved the appointment of Poonam Gupta as the Deputy Governor of the country’s central bank The Reserve Bank of India.
She has also been a member of the Advisory Council of the 16th Finance Commission.
With the appointment, she became the first woman not from the RBI ranks to adorn the chair of Deputy Governor of the Central bank.
Prior to her, the two women who have held the position of Deputy Governor in RBI were:
- Shyamala Gopinath: She started her career in RBI in the year 1972.
- Usha Thorat: She has also joined the central bank in the year 1972.
- KJ Udjeshi: First woman RBI Dy Governor . She joined RBI in 1965
WHO IS DR POONAM GUPTA?
Poonam Gupta has been a distinguished economist. She has been the DG of National Council for Apllied Economic Research (NCAER), and also been the part time member of the Economic Advisory Council (EAC) to the Prime Minister.
Prior to leading the NCAER, the private economic think-tank, she had held the position of Lead Economist in Global Macro and Market Research, International Finance Corporation (IFC), World Bank Group during the year 2020-2021.
Poonam Gupta started her career as Lecturer at Hindu College in the year 1991. She joined as Teaching Assistant at the University of Marylands in the year 1993.
In the year 1996, she joined as Summer intern in the department of Monetary and Exchange Affairs Department in the IMF.
She then rose to rank of Economist in the IMF in the year 2005-06.
Poonam worked as Asst professor in the Delhi School of Economics in the year 2006-08.
In the year 2009, she was Professor in the Indian Council for Research on International Economics Relations (ICRIER).

Poonam had her graduation in Economics from the Hindu College under Delhi University in the year 1989. She figured among the top-3 students.
She had her post graduation from Delhi School of Economics in the year 1991 on the subject of Applied International Macro, International Trade and Econometrics.
She also did an MA on Economics from the University of Marylands in the year 1995. She secured the highest Grade Point Average in the class.
Poonam had her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Maryland in the year 1998.
