Bhubaneswar, Dec 31: Two electric double-decker buses are on their way from Mumbai to Bhubaneswar and are expected to be deployed ahead of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) event, scheduled to take place from January 8 to 10.
The Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) shared the update on its official social media handle, stating that the buses would be ready for use in the capital city before the event.
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter) announced: “Double-decker electric buses are en route Bhubaneswar to be deployed before Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in the capital city.”
The announcement came after CRUT opened a tender for the procurement of these buses a few weeks ago. Along with the post, the transport body also released an image of one of the buses, showcasing its design and features.
The air-conditioned buses are adorned with artwork representing Odisha’s rich history, art, and culture, including iconic symbols like the Konark Sun Temple wheel and the Dhauli Stupa. These buses are part of a larger plan by the CRUT to enhance urban transport in Bhubaneswar and neighboring cities.
The CRUT had earlier revealed plans to procure five double-decker electric buses, which would initially operate in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Puri. If successful, the fleet may be expanded in the future. Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra emphasized that the initiative was in line with the government’s commitment to promoting green energy and reducing the carbon footprint.
In addition to improving public transportation, the introduction of double-decker buses is expected to ease traffic congestion in the three cities, making commuting more efficient and sustainable.
