Bhubaneswar, Nov 27: Rescued elephant calf got a new home at Chandaka wildlife sanctuary. The baby elephant- Radhika was rescued from the Narla forest in Kalahandi after the tragic death of its mother. The baby elephant was found in a distressed condition due to its deteriorating health.
Chandaka wildlife sanctuary has taken responsibility for its care, with the Department of Forests ensuring that the elephant receives proper medical attention.
According to Sharat Kumar Behera, the District Forest Officer (DFO), “Radhika was brought to the Chandaka wildlife sanctuary for treatment after its condition worsened. After the death of the mother, the helpless baby elephant was found lone in the forest. Forest officials successfully rescued the young elephant and began its rehabilitation process.”
After the tests, the baby elephant was placed in a separate enclosure to ensure its well-being. However, elephant’s health is reportedly improving, and it has been confirmed that Radhika is stable.
In the coming days, it will begin training at the Kumki Elephant Training Center to help it adjust to its new life. DFO Behera stated that the animal’s rehabilitation process will continue under the close supervision of experts.
The rescue of Radika highlights the ongoing efforts of Odisha's forest department to protect and care for orphaned and injured wildlife in the region, ensuring that they are given the best possible chance at recovery and eventual release into the forest.
