Bhubaneswar, Mar 31: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a major renovation of the Satya Nagar crematorium in the capital city.
The project is estimated to cost around Rs 60 crore and aims to modernize the facility and provide better amenities for the people using it.
Earlier, there were discussions about relocating the crematorium due to its central location in the city. However, those plans have been dropped, and the focus is now on upgrading the existing facility.
Key Features of the Renovation Plan:
- Aesthetic Entrance & Pathways: The crematorium will have a well-designed entrance gate and separate pathways for entry and exit to manage the flow of visitors.
- Rest House & Waiting Hall: A dedicated waiting hall for visitors and a rest house for relatives of the deceased will be constructed.
- Death Registration Office: A separate office will be set up for completing death registration formalities.
- Shops for Cremation Materials: Small shops within the premises will sell essential items needed for cremation.
- Toilets & Changing Rooms: Family members will have access to hygienic toilets and changing rooms to freshen up after performing last rites.
- Multiple Cremation Options: The facility will include both gas-based and traditional wooden pyre cremation methods.
- Repair of Electric Furnace: The electric furnace, which has been non-functional since 1999, will be repaired and made operational.
- Firewood Storage Facility: A designated area will be created for storing firewood for traditional cremations.
- Dedicated Platforms: Two separate platforms will be built for conducting last rites.
- Environmental Improvements: The existing pond within the crematorium premises will be renovated, and a park with paved walkways will be developed to create a peaceful environment.
Due to land constraints, relocating the crematorium was not feasible. Instead, the BMC has decided to modernize and upgrade the existing facility. The redevelopment will ensure a well-maintained, hygienic, and accessible space for conducting cremation rituals in the city.
