"Secure Women, Empowered Women": OSCW Pledges to Build a Safer Odisha for Women on its Foundation Day

"When I am safe, then I am strong." This powerful statement was the central theme as the Odisha State Commission for Women (OSCW) celebrated its 32nd Foundation Day. The event was held in Bhubaneswar, calling for action, and emphasised on women's empowerment within safety and security matrix. Deputy Chief Minister Prabhati Parida strongly bought this point, saying that society needs to step up alongside the government to ensure women's rights and provide them with justice and protection. It is a shared responsibility and stressed that one can't simply rely on the government for everything and remain silent. Active participation from society is crucial.

The Key issues and Action called for

The event, was held at a local hotel, featured prominent guests, including National Commission for Women Chairperson, Bijaya Rahatkar. She praised the Odisha government's women-centric initiatives along with that she highlighted critical issues on: child marriage, gender-based violence, cybercrime, human trafficking, and workplace sexual harassment which were affecting the women most. She stressed that these problems require widespread public awareness campaigns to find lasting solutions. The speakers discussed, that creating awareness across the regions would be a great help.

Deputy Chief Minister Parida also gave a practical directive: display toll-free helpline numbers for women's safety and assistance prominently in public places. This ensures that any woman facing a difficult situation can immediately call for help, and that help should be swift and effective. It is important to give a strong comforting response.

Grassroots Awareness

The OSCW is taking concrete steps to spread awareness. They announced a three-day block-level legal awareness program, scheduled for the 11th, 12th, and 13th of the current month. This program will involve a wide range of participants, including field staff from the Women and Child Development Department, Anganwadi workers, ASHA workers, and representatives from voluntary organizations, youth leaders, and members of Self-Help Group (SHG). The goal is to reach every corner of the community with crucial information about women's rights and legal protections. The program also had the presence of, Shubha Sharma, and director Monisha Banarjee. The aim was to have separate gram sabha for women, where the problems can be disccussed and find a way out.

The 32nd Foundation Day of the OSCW was more than just a celebration; it was a reminder to create a society where women feel safe, secure, and empowered. It highlighted the importance of collaboration between the government, the community, and individuals to address the challenges women face. The core message was clear, empowering women isn't just a government responsibility; it's a shared duty, and true empowerment begins with ensuring safety and security.
