Bhubaneswar: Today in year 1990, Agneepath was released. Despite bad word of mouth, the Amitabh Bachchan and Mithun Chakraborty starred movie had a record opener.
Agneepath had grossed around Rs 85 lakh on its opening day, though the film made on a budget of Rs 28 cr could earn life time collection of Rs 10 cr and the much hyped film turned a box office failure.
But over the years the film went on to became a cult classic film of Indian cinema. The film was remade in 2021 starring Hrithik Roshan. The remake of Agneepath, despite not casting anyone in Mithun Chakraborty’s shoes, it went to earn Rs 193 cr vis-à-vis of Rs 58cr budget.
AGNEEPATH TRIVIAS
- To give Amitabh Bachchan the gangster look, his mouth was stuffed with cotton wool underneath both cheeks, as was Marlon Brando's in The Godfather (1972)
- The song Jhumma Chumma De De was actually planned for this film but the director felt it would not go with Amitabh's role and hence the song was replaced by Ali Baba and Jhumma Chumma was used in HUM.
- Mithun Chakraborty's unique role of Kishnan Iyer was inspired by one of his roommates of his struggling days, before he became a popular film star.
- In his struggling days Mithun used to do room sharing with Devio who used to pay Rs 150 while Mithun Used to pay Rs 75.
- Devio had the bed while Mithun used to sleep on the floor
- One specific time Mithun used his bed whilst he was at work and when Devio came back he scolded Mithun.
- This incident entrenched in Mithun’s psyche and he put Devio's character on screen.
- Amitabh Bachchan and Tinnu Anand worked together as actor and director in Kaalia (1981), Shahenshah (1988) and Main Azaad Hoon (1989), this was the first film in which they acted together.
- Amitabh's famous telephone being a bad invention dialogue was repeated by Anil Kapoor in Trimurti
- Aloknath's character of Master Dinanath Chavan was actually inspired from Shriram Lagoo's iconic character of Mastar Shridhar Pant from Pinjra 1972.
- Kader Khan's shelved directorial movie Jaahil had a connection to Agneepath.
- In Jaahil the honest father had to die supposedly and when he dies no one touches his body . The little son carries his father to the pyre alone on a cart and vows revenge...
- As Jaahil was shelved and Kader Khan being the dialogue writer for Agneepath, he decided to use those scenes in Agneepath.
- Mukul Anand asked Kader Khan if he could use those portions written originally for Jaahil .
- Vikram Gokhale had worked in an Amitabh movie 19 years before Agneepath...
- It was Parwana, released in 1971.
- Coincidentally, Vikram Gokhale played a cop even in this movie... a junior inspector.
