Keonjhar, March 1: A Class 6 student at an Ashram school in Champua of Keonjhar district has been found pregnant, marking the latest in a series of similar incidents in the state.
The girl's pregnancy was discovered after she missed her menstrual cycle during a routine health check-up by an Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) following her return from the Makar Sankranti holiday in January. A subsequent pregnancy test at the district headquarters hospital confirmed the positive result.
District administration officials have instructed the school's headmaster to file a police report. The student reportedly confessed to the hostel matron that she had engaged in a physical relationship with her maternal uncle, which she believes led to the pregnancy.
Recently, a Class 10 student at a residential girls' high school in Chitrakonda of Malkangiri district delivered a baby on the hostel rooftop after experiencing labor pains following her English HSC examination.
Similarly, a 15-year-old student in Jajpur gave birth to a baby girl. She had been repeatedly raped by a 25-year-old neighbour. The girl was taken to a community health center after complaining of severe abdominal pain. Police have detained the accused and booked him under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
