Beijing, March 28: Bangladesh's Chief Adviser, Muhammad Yunus, met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Friday, where they engaged in discussions on bilateral matters, including trade, investment, and cooperation.

Shariqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, described the meeting as "highly significant and successful." He emphasized that Yunus highlighted the long-standing historical ties between Bangladesh and China, notably marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

“The meeting was very cordial and the most important and successful. Professor Yunus discussed the enduring connection between our countries and underscored the 50-year milestone in our diplomatic relations,”

Alam said. “He raised various issues with China, and importantly, President Xi responded positively to each, reiterating China's full support for Yunus's government."

Alam further noted that Xi Jinping expressed his commitment to encouraging Chinese investors to explore opportunities in Bangladesh. "An essential aspect of this visit was the invitation extended to Chinese investors. Professor Yunus brought this up during the meeting, and President Xi assured that he would encourage Chinese investment in Bangladesh," Alam added.

The discussions also included a proposal for a joint project on the Teesta River in Bangladesh with Chinese assistance. Alam expressed hope that the bilateral relationship between the two countries would progress to a new level, ushering in a fresh chapter of collaboration.

"There was also a conversation about water resource management, with the Teesta River issue being addressed," Alam mentioned, though he did not provide further details. Both India and China have shown interest in contributing to water management initiatives concerning the Teesta River.

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement underscoring the deep historical ties between the two nations, noting that the ancient Silk Road had closely linked them. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, both countries have supported each other, maintained equality, and cooperated for mutual benefit. The statement affirmed that China's friendly and stable policy towards Bangladesh would continue.

Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of strengthening political mutual trust between China and Bangladesh, reaffirming support for each other's core interests and major concerns. The Chinese President also stressed the desire to enhance cooperation through initiatives such as the "Belt and Road" program, with a focus on sectors like the digital economy, green economy, marine economy, infrastructure, and water management. Xi highlighted the significance of cultural exchanges to foster mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.

During the meeting, Yunus reaffirmed Bangladesh’s deep friendship with China, emphasizing that the two countries had always understood, respected, and trusted one another. "China is a reliable partner and friend of Bangladesh," Yunus said, adding that Bangladesh strongly supports the one-China policy and opposes any form of "Taiwan independence."
