In a somber turn of events, India's bowling coach, Morne Morkel, has left the Champions Trophy squad in Dubai and returned to his native South Africa. This sudden departure comes after the passing of his father, Albert Morkel. The news reached Morkel on Monday, February 17th, just days before India's crucial opening match against Bangladesh on February 20th.

The Indian team is currently stationed in Dubai, the venue for all their Champions Trophy matches. Sources have confirmed that Morkel immediately flew back home to be with his family during this difficult time. His presence and guidance were considered invaluable for the Indian bowling attack, especially with the absence of their pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah.

Morkel's bond with his father was known to be exceptionally strong. In a past interview with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Morkel shared a touching anecdote about his father. He recounted how, after accepting the India coaching job, his first phone call was to his dad, not even his wife. He described sitting alone for five minutes, reflecting on the magnitude of the opportunity, before sharing the news with his family. This heartfelt story underscores the deep respect and love he held for his father.

Morkel's absence will undoubtedly be felt by the Indian team. He was expected to play a key role in strategizing and mentoring the bowlers throughout the tournament. His experience and expertise would have been crucial in navigating the challenges of the Champions Trophy, particularly without Bumrah's leadership.

India's campaign in the Champions Trophy begins with a group stage clash against Bangladesh. They will also face arch-rivals Pakistan and New Zealand in the group stage. Should India progress to the knockout stages, one of the semi-finals and the final will also be held at the Dubai International Stadium.

While the team prepares for their opening match, the thoughts and prayers of the entire Indian cricket fraternity are with Morne and his family during this period of grief.
