Jhansi, Nov 16: At least 10 infants were killed after a devastating fire broke out on Friday evening at the Maharani Laxmibai Medical College in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh. The fire reportedly started in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), possibly due to a short circuit, and quickly spread due to the oxygen concentration in the room.
At the time of the incident, 54 babies were admitted to the NICU. Hospital staff and doctors acted immediately, and rescued 37 infants from the ward. Injured babies are currently under treatment.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences, directing the district administration to expedite relief and rescue efforts. He also instructed the Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak and Principal Health Secretary Partha Sarthi Sen Sharma to visit the site and provide immediate assistance.
In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), CM Adityanath said, "The death of children in this tragic incident is extremely sad. I pray to Lord Shri Ram for the peace of the departed souls and a speedy recovery for the injured."
Further investigation into the matter is underway.
