Kartik Purnima is celebrated on the full moon day of the Kartik month, also known as Dev Deepawali . On this auspicious day, devotees take holy baths in sacred rivers and perform acts of charity. In the evening, the ritual of lighting lamps, known as ‘Deepdan’, is conducted in the rivers, with special celebrations taking place at the Ganga ghats. It is believed that bathing in the Ganges on this day washes away all sins and grants blessings from Lord Vishnu.

This year, Kartik Purnima will be celebrated on November 15. Devotees will worship both Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi on this day.

Notably, Kartik Purnima will begin at 6:19 am on November 15, 2024, and conclude at 2:58 am on November 16, 2024. On this occasion, the stories of Lord Satyanarayana are recited, and lamps are lit in homes, temples, rivers, and ponds to celebrate Dev Dipawali.

According to the Agni Purana, there is no greater vow than Deepdan, which is believed to yield immense merit. It is also believed that Lord Shiva imparted the importance of Deepdan to his son, Kartikeya, which is why lamp lighting occurs throughout the entire month of Kartik. On this day, devotees are encouraged to donate lamps in numbers of 11, 21, or 51 based on their faith.

Kartik Purnima also commemorates the victory of Lord Shiva over the demon Tripurasura. Hence, it is celebrated as Tripurari Purnima.
