Varanasi, holds an immense spiritual significance in Hinduism. Known as the "City of Light" (Kashi), it is believed that dying in Varanasi grants liberation (moksha) from the cycle of birth and death. This belief has given rise to unique home stay’s known as "death hotels," where terminally ill and elderly individuals spend their final days awaiting death. These hotels, such as Mukti Bhawan and Mumukshu Bhawan, are not conventional lodgings but retreats designed to facilitate a peaceful deaths.

Varanasi is considered the abode of Lord Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction and regeneration. According to Hindu scriptures, dying in Varanasi and having one’s ashes scattered in the Ganges River ensures salvation, freeing the soul from the cycle of reincarnation. This belief has attracted thousands of devotees to the city for centuries, making it a focal point for end-of-life rituals.  

The concept of death hotels emerged to accommodate those who wish to die in Varanasi. These establishments, often run by charitable organizations, provide a space for individuals to spend their final days in spiritual surroundings. The tradition reflects a cultural acceptance of death as a natural and part of life, rather than something to be feared.  

Mukti Bhawan 

Established in 1908 and converted into a hospice in 1958, Mukti Bhawan is one of the most well-known death hotels in Varanasi. It offers 12 spartan rooms for guests who are terminally ill or nearing the end of their lives.  Guests are allowed a maximum stay of two weeks, with extensions granted only in exceptional cases. The hotel charges a nominal fee of ₹20 per day to cover electricity costs, and services are free for those who cannot afford to pay.   The hotel provides basic amenities, including a small temple for daily prayers and rituals. Families are encouraged to accompany their loved ones, and get set for the spiritual seperation.

Mumukshu Bhawan 

Established in 1920, Mumukshu Bhawan operates more like a long-term hospice. It accommodates over 300 residents, most of them are elderly and have been waiting for death for years or even decades. Unlike Mukti Bhawan, there is no time limit for stays, and residents are charged minimal rent for accommodation and electricity. Those who cannot afford the fees are also welcomed.  The facility provides free food, medical care, and spiritual support, making it a sanctuary for those who have no family or resources.  

Operations

Admission Criteria: Death hotels primarily cater to elderly or terminally ill individuals. At Mukti Bhawan, guests must be on their deathbed, while Mumukshu Bhawan accepts long-term residents.  

Spiritual Practices: Daily prayers, rituals, and dabbing & offering of Ganges water are integral to the experience. These practices are believed to aid in achieving moksha.  

Family Involvement: Families often accompany their loved ones, providing emotional and physical support. They are also involved in cremation rituals, which are conducted at Manikarnika and Harishchandra Ghats.  

Death hotels highlight the Hindu belief in the sanctity of Varanasi and the importance of dying in a spiritually significant place. It reflects a broader cultural acceptance of death as a natural part of life. For many, these establishments offer a sense of purpose and peace in their final days.  

However, the concept has also sparked debates. Critics argue that it perpetuates superstition, while others view it as a compassionate response to the needs of the elderly and terminally ill. Despite this death hotels remain a unique and deeply rooted aspect of Varanasi’s cultural and spiritual landscape.  Death hotels in Varanasi are more than just places to die, but to the belief offer a final opportunity to achieve moksha in one of Hinduism’s holiest cities.
