Bhubaneswar, Nov 15: November marks a lively time in Odisha as the state comes alive with two significant festivals that reflect its rich cultural and spiritual heritage: Kartika Purnima and Prathamasthami.
Kartika Purnima (November 15)
Kartika Purnima celebrates Odisha’s maritime legacy and is observed on the full moon day of the Kartika month. Today, Odias participated in Boita Bandana, a traditional ritual where people created and sailed boats made from banana bark on rivers. These boats, often adorned with lighted diyas, symbolize the state’s illustrious maritime history and its ancient sailors' journeys to Southeast Asia, showcasing Odisha’s pivotal role as a maritime hub.
In addition to the boat-sailing, devotees visited temples to offer prayers to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu, seeking blessings for prosperity and well-being.
Prathamasthami (November 23)
Following closely, people of Odisha will be celebrating Prathamastami on November 23 to honor the first-born child in each family, making it a culturally significant occasion. Families come together to prepare and enjoy Enduri Pitha, a special delicacy made of rice and turmeric leaves, which is integral to the festive spirit of the day.
This festival emphasizes family bonds and the importance of children in society. Rituals and prayers are performed to ensure the well-being and prosperity of offspring, reinforcing the cultural values and traditions that are deeply rooted in Odia society.
Kartika Purnima and Prathamasthami highlight Odisha's vibrant traditions and profound spirituality, connecting the past with the present. These festivals not only celebrate the state’s cultural depth but also strengthen community ties, making November a month of joy and reverence across Odisha.
