Gajapati, Mar 15: In a tragic incident, a poacher was killed after accidentally shooting himself while hunting wild animals in a forest under Mohana police limits in Odisha's Gajapati district.
The deceased has been identified as Harischandra Bhuyan, a resident of Sindhiba village under Rayagada police limits in the district.
As per reports, Harischandra, who used to sell date palm sap at Kunkuni Padasahi village in last two months, had gone to a nearby forest along with a few villagers for hunting wild animals last evening.
However, he was found dead with gunshot injuries today morning. The country-made gun and ammunition were also recovered from the spot.
Though the exact reason behind his death is yet to be ascertained, prima facie suggested that he might have lost his life after sustaining bullet injuries fired from his own gun.
Upon getting the information, police arrived at the spot and seized the body. Subsequently, it was sent for post-mortem. The cops have detained the deceased’s relative and a villager for questioning in this connection.
An investigation has been initiated into the matter to ascertain the cause of death, said the police.
