Bhubaneswar, Nov 8: In a significant step forward for Odisha's railway infrastructure, the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) announced on Thursday that the engine testing and safety inspections on the newly constructed 16.27-kilometer section between Jharmunda and Boudh stations have been successfully concluded.
This development marks a key milestone in a much-anticipated rail project designed to enhance connectivity in the region's remote areas, as reported by the East Coast Railway (ECoR).
Work is also progressing on additional segments of the project, including a 13.701-kilometer stretch from Boudh to Champapur and a 13.437-kilometer stretch from Champapur to Purunakatak, with construction taking place from both ends to expedite completion. Overall, the ambitious project encompasses a total of 301 kilometers, with 199 kilometers already operational.
This operational stretch includes 106 kilometers connecting Khordha Road to Daspalla and 93 kilometers linking Bolangir to Boudh. Moreover, the 27-kilometer section from Boudh to Purunakatak is nearing its completion, further propelling the project towards its timeline.
The final 75-kilometer stretch from Purunakatak to Daspalla presents unique engineering challenges, including tunnel construction through dense jungle and sanctuary terrain. However, despite these complexities, construction is moving forward steadily, with an eye on completing this vital link soon.
The Khordha Road-Bolangir Rail Line is poised to play a transformative role in boosting economic growth and enhancing transportation access in previously isolated areas. The Ministry of Railways is closely monitoring the project's progress to ensure its timely completion, reflecting Indian Railways' commitment to overcoming engineering challenges.
With the CRS’s approval following a thorough safety inspection, the Jharmunda-Boudh section is now cleared for train operations, although official services will commence only after the completion of remaining infrastructure and passenger amenities. A light engine trial run has already been conducted, demonstrating the momentum toward improved connectivity in the region.
This landmark achievement brings Odisha’s remote communities closer to economic opportunities and better accessibility, as residents eagerly await the full benefits of this transformative rail link.
