Mohana, Nov 25: In a major crackdown on illegal cannabis cultivation, ganja (cannabis) plants worth Rs 6 crore have been destroyed at Juropato village in Jirang panchayat under Mohana police limits in the district.
Acting on a tip-off regarding extensive ganja farming in the area, the excise department launched an operation. During the raid, approximately 28 acres of illegally cultivated ganja plants were destroyed. The operation involved a coordinated effort among police, excise officials, forest department staff, and revenue officers.
In the last three days, authorities conducted three separate raids, leading to the destruction of cannabis crops across 113 acres, valued at nearly Rs19 crore. On Friday, an operation near Kutimera demolished ganja cultivation on 42 acres, amounting to Rs 5 crore. Similarly, on Saturday, another raid near Narangi destroyed 43 acres of ganja plants, with an estimated value of Rs 8 crore.
The operation marks a significant step in tackling cannabis farming, especially in this region, which had previously been affected by Maoist influence. The area, known for its dense forests and challenging landscape, has witnessed illegal activities for years, with farmers continuing to grow cannabis due to a lack of awareness about the harmful effects of such cultivation.
Meanwhile, police started an investigation into the matter.
