New Delhi, April 2: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced the appointment of Poonam Gupta, a former World Bank economist, as its new deputy governor. This appointment comes ahead of the RBI's upcoming bi-monthly monetary policy committee meeting, scheduled for April 7-9, 2025.
Gupta will serve a three-year term in her new role.
Currently, Gupta holds the position of Director General at the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER). She is also an active member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister and serves as the Convener for the Advisory Council to the 16th Finance Commission.
Before joining NCAER in 2021, Gupta brought nearly two decades of experience from her senior roles at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, both based in Washington, D.C. Her academic credentials include serving as the RBI Chair Professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) and as a Professor at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER).
Gupta is involved in several influential positions, including serving on the boards of NIPFP and the Global Development Network (GDN). She is also a member of advisory groups for the World Bank and contributes to the Development Advisory Committee of NITI Aayog. Furthermore, she is part of the Executive Committee of FICCI and chaired the Task Force on Macroeconomics and Trade during India's G20 Presidency.
At NCAER, Gupta spearheads research in crucial areas such as economic growth, international financial systems, central banking, macroeconomic stability, public debt, and state finances.
Gupta holds a Ph.D. and a Master's degree in Economics from the University of Maryland, USA.
