Crew-10 Finally Paves Way for Williams and Wilmore's Return from ISS

It's been a stretched long months for NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore. What was supposed to be a short stint on the International Space Station (ISS) turned into an extended stay, filled with technical issues, delays, and even a bit of political drama. But finally, there's light at the end of the tunnel! NASA and SpaceX successfully launched the Crew-10 mission, paving the way for the stranded astronauts to return home.

Crew-10 Takes Flight

Early Friday morning (local time), a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket roared to life at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, carrying the Dragon spacecraft and the Crew-10 team. This mission, the 10th crew rotation under SpaceX's human space transportation system, sends four new astronauts to the ISS: Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers from NASA, Takuya Onishi from JAXA (the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), and Kirill Peskov from Roscosmos (the Russian space agency). The launch went smoothly, after a brief delay on Thursday due to a minor technical hiccup.

The Long Wait for Williams and Wilmore:

Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore's journey to the ISS began back in June of last year, aboard Boeing's Starliner spacecraft. A planned eight-day mission turned into a much longer stay due to a Starliner malfunction. Their original return date in February was also pushed back.

The Rescue Plan:

With the Starliner facing ongoing issues, NASA reassigned Williams and Wilmore to SpaceX's Crew-9 mission, which arrived at the ISS in September. The Crew-9 Dragon, however, only carried two astronauts, leaving no room for Williams and Wilmore to return. The plan, all along, has been for them to come back shortly after the Crew-10 launch.

Controversy and Accusations

The extended mission, unsurprisingly, didn't escape the political spotlight. Former US President Donald Trump and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk made headlines by suggesting that the Biden administration had "abandoned" the astronauts. Musk, in particular, sparked controversy with some of his online comments. These kinds of claims caused a stir in the space community. Retired Astronauts came to the defence of Mr. Mogensen after Mr. Musk attacked him online. Mr. Wilmore seemed to take the side of the Space X CEO, claiming that his comments must have been factual. Mr. Trump also added to the confusion by referring to decorated former naval captain Sunita Williams as "the woman with the wild hair."

Mission Accomplished (Almost)

Despite the delays and the surrounding drama, the focus now is on bringing Williams and Wilmore home safely. The successful launch of Crew-10 is a critical step in that process. The space community – and the world – will be watching closely as these veteran astronauts finally make their journey back to Earth.
