Rourkela, Apr 27: Police in Rourkela arrested a youth for allegedly attempting to extort money by impersonating an official from the Odisha Chief Minister's Office (CMO).
The accused has been identified as Aman Pradhan (24), a native of Kalahandi district residing at Sankalp Vihar in Bhubaneswar.
As per reports, Pradhan made a call to Bimbadhara Sethi, the Deputy Director of Mines in Rourkela, on April 22 and demanded money by posing as IAS officer Manoj Kumar Sahoo, who is the Private Secretary to Chief Minister Mohan Majhi.
Suspecting the call to be fraudulent, Sethi disconnected the conversation.
However, Aman again contacted Sethi again using the same number the following day. Again he introduced himself as IAS Manoj Sahoo and reiterated his demand for money.
Sethi grew suspicious of the repeated calls and lodged a complaint at the Udit Nagar Police Station.
Acting on the complaint, police swung into action with assistance from the Rourkela Cyber Police Station. The cops tracked the location of the accused and apprehended him in Bhubaneswar.
Aman has been charged under sections 351(4), 308(2), and 242 of the BNS Act, as well as section 66(D) of the IT Act, for impersonation and attempted extortion.
Following his arrest, he was presented before a local court in Rourkela for further legal proceedings.
