New Delhi, November 13: Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna has nominated Justice Surya Kant as the new Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC).
This appointment was announced through a notification by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) dated November 12.
Justice Surya Kant succeeds Justice BR Gavai, who will now lead NALSA, an organization dedicated to offering free legal services to the weaker sections of society.
While the Chief Justice of India serves as NALSA's patron-in-chief, its executive chair is held by the senior-most judge after the CJI.
The second senior-most judge assumes leadership of the SCLSC, tasked with providing legal aid to litigants in the Supreme Court.
Justice Surya Kant, formerly Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court from October 2018, was elevated to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019. His tenure as a Supreme Court judge is set to conclude on February 9, 2027.
