Chennai, March 28: Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra, who has come under fire for his jokes about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, approached the Madras High Court on Friday seeking transit anticipatory bail in connection with the case.
Kamra, who hails from Tamil Nadu’s Vullupuram district, expressed concerns about the possibility of being arrested by the Mumbai Police. The 36-year-old comedian’s controversial comments about Shinde during his recent show in Mumbai have sparked significant backlash and led to two summonses issued by the Mumbai police.
An FIR was filed against Kamra in Mumbai after he referred to Shinde as a "gaddar" (traitor) in his YouTube comedy special, Naya Bharat. The video triggered widespread outrage, prompting the police to summon Kamra twice, instructing him to appear for questioning by March 31.
In his petition, Kamra emphasized that he has been receiving hundreds of death threats since the video was posted online. The matter is set to be heard after the court’s recess.
In response to the second summon, Kamra requested the Mumbai Police grant him seven days to travel to the city, but this request was denied. Additionally, a breach of privilege notice was filed against Kamra by the Maharashtra Legislative Council for his remarks on Shinde.
